Mid-Week Reflection: Support Should Reduce Stress, Not Add to It
Support systems are meant to provide stability.
That’s the point.
To reduce uncertainty.
To make it easier to meet basic needs.
To create space for people to recover, work, care for others, or move forward.
But many systems don’t feel stabilizing.
They feel stressful.
What Support Is Supposed to Do
At their core, support systems should be designed to reduce pressure.
Healthcare coverage should make care accessible.
Income support should create financial stability.
Leave protections should give people time.
The goal should be relief.
What They Often Require Instead
In practice, accessing and maintaining support often requires:
Tracking deadlines.
Responding quickly to notices.
Monitoring income closely.
Reporting changes immediately.
Following up when something goes wrong.
Even when everything is working “correctly,” the process requires constant attention.
The Stress of Instability
Support is often conditional.
Coverage can change.
Benefits can end.
Eligibility can be reviewed.
Small shifts — a raise, a schedule change, a missed notice — can have outsized consequences.
So people stay alert.
They check for updates.
They worry about missing something.
They try to stay ahead of a system that can change quickly.
That kind of vigilance is exhausting.
What I See in Practice
I see this tension all the time.
People who technically have support — but don’t feel secure.
They don’t take a raise because it would cost them more than they’d gain.
They stay in jobs — or out of them — to avoid losing coverage.
They delay care because they aren’t sure it will still be covered.
They spend time managing the system itself, not just their health or work.
Sometimes, they give up — not because they don’t need support, but because the process is too difficult to sustain.
The support exists.
But it doesn’t always function as support.
When Support Becomes Another Stressor
When systems require constant monitoring, rapid response, and ongoing navigation, they introduce a different kind of burden.
Not just financial.
Not just logistical.
Cognitive and emotional.
Support becomes something you have to manage carefully — not something you can rely on.
Support systems should reduce stress.
When they consistently add stress instead, something in the design isn’t working.
